Leupold has issued a warning about counterfeit Leupold Mark 4 and Prismatic riflescopes. These counterfeit riflescopes seem to come in through China and Leupold sees an increased number of scopes that are sent in for service. In these cases, Leupold does refuse service as these scopes are not authentic Leupold scopes and thus aren’t covered by the lifetime guarantee that is given to original riflescopes.
Leupold states that they track every serial number so they can easily identify if a scope that comes in for repair is authentic or not. This on the other hand also helps any Leupold rifle scope owner to verify that their scope is authentic. You can simply call Leupold at their service number to confirm that your scope is truly a Leupold rifle scope.
In general, most of the scopes appear to originate from Hong Kong (People’s Republic of China), and have “Leupold Mark 4” laser engraved on the bottom of the turret in a silver etch, while the black ring on the objective is etched in white and does not include the name “Leupold”. The scopes also do not bear the Leupold medallion, a mark all Leupold scopes will always possess. An authentic Mark 4 riflescope will always be engraved black on black and have the name “Leupold” engraved on the black ring.
You can find the complete Leupold statement at their site.
As always, it’s best to purchase your Leupold rifle scopes through an authorized reseller like Amazon.com. They have a lot of different scopes for sale at the best prices.
